Municipal services for tourists

Welcome to Salla! The municipality of Salla has good services in relation to its population, and many of them are also available for tourists.

Visiting doctors or nurses

If you get sick, you will receive urgent emergency care from the Salla Health Centre. During evenings and weekends, doctor emergency services are in Kemijärvi and during nights in Rovaniemi. You should check the need for emergency health services by calling before you leave.

Non-urgent treatment times should be booked at your own municipality. If you are not a resident of Salla you can still arrange check-up visits for chronic conditions such as arthritis or the need to take blood thinners, bone fracture check-ups, and drug injection visits. Home care is not covered by these services. You should have information about your valid medication.

If you require treatment for a chronic condition, please bring the client treatment plan made at your health centre with you. For example, it could be a treatment plan printed from the patient information system, a Marevan card, or a maternity card for small children. Presenting these gives you access to check-up visits.

You should notify the Salla Health Centre about your needs at least three weeks before your first visit.

Vacation, work, or study

Living arrangements in Salla can be made even if you are only coming for a shorter period. With Sallan Vuokratalot the shortest rental period is one month. You are responsible for furnishing the apartment yourself.

Children can receive an early-childhood education place for any length of time, for example, one week during the parents’ work or vacation. If you need a place, fill in the online application on the Daisy system. For more information, contact the staff at the Early-Childhood Education Centre.

Schools also welcome students. Salla High School is open to all students, both Finnish and foreign.

The Summer High School provides life-long memories of studying and fun times in the midnight sun amongst international company.

Check out Salla’s Adult Education Centre course guide – you might find something interesting for your vacation. With many of the courses, you can pop in for a single lesson in the middle of the year with a one-time payment, such as group aerobics, country-western dancing, or karaoke.

How about getting married in the peaceful nature of Lapland?

Salla is a great place to get married. Marriages are not a municipal service, but the mayor Erkki Parkkinen, who is a lawyer, has the right to perform civil marriages. Performing marriages is not related to his work as a mayor but is his side job. Dozens of couples have already said ‘yes’ under the wilderness sky.

It is possible to arrange a wedding ceremony in the place chosen by the couple. For example, events have been organised in the chapel of the Snow Lounge snow and ice hotel at Sallatunturi in winter, on the summit of the Sallatunturi fell, and at other sites out in nature.

If you’re planning a wedding on your trip to Salla, please contact the mayor Erkki Parkkinen, tel. +358 (0)40 039 3987 or email firstname.lastname@salla.fi.

Museum, exercise, and shopping

The municipality runs the Salla Museum of War and Reconstruction, which is one of the most popular tourist sites in the area.

Many of the village and cultural events are also attended by tourists.

Salla has good sports facilities. A bowling alley, an ice hall, tennis courts, a sports field, a sports hall, swimming areas, playgrounds, and outdoor exercise facilities are all services provided by the municipality that are available for you to enjoy. There are no queues or crowds.

There is an extensive network of cross-country ski trails. The municipality takes care of maintaining the ski trails together with local companies. The municipality also maintains snowmobile, hiking, and cycling trails.

The ice hall has free public skating times every day, and the sports hall offers a wide range of services. By getting an electronic key, you can have access to the high-quality gym at any time of the day. The sports hall also has guided exercise groups, which you can sign up to. There is a floorball time open to all, which is a tourist favourite.

You can also use the airgun shooting range at the bottom floor of the Municipal Building when it is open, i.e. when the Sallan Ampujat shooting association is there practising.

After exercising, you may be interested in browsing the shops of the village and the Välikäsi flea market, which is owned by the municipality.

You can find more information about all of the above services on the municipality’s website.
